ETHICAL MENTORING

COURSE OVERVIEW

Ethical mentoring is a recent development, arising out of the collapse of confidence amongst investors, government, employees and society in general, in the ethical behaviour of corporations, particularly within the finance sector, and other professions, notably the health sector. Codes of practice and general education interventions help to some extent, but they do not address the complexity of complexity of values, nor help people think through the ethical dimensions of day-to-day decisions in the workplace.

Ethical mentors:

  • Help people with ethical dilemmas think through how to address these
  • Act as first port of call to potential whistle-blowers, guiding them in how to proceed without doing irreparable harm to their careers
  • Help people develop ethical awareness and ethical resilience
  • Act as a conscience to the top team, if asked to.

Typically, ethical mentors are experienced executives who have a strong interest in the issue, or internal coaches who want to extend their portfolio of skills into a new and challenging area. Organisations which have taken the ethical mentor concept on board include the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Barclays, Diageo and the UK National Health Service.

Among the benefits of ethical mentoring are:

  • Opening up the debate over ethical awareness within the organisation
  • Increasing the protection for whistle-blowers by giving them a confidential resource, with whom to discuss their concerns – and hence resolve issues earlier, with less damage to themselves and to the company
  • Identifying recurring issues, so that interventions can be made at a systemic level
