In order to take up a challenge, we need agency (am I able to do this or make it happen) and will (do I want to do this or make it happen?)

The potential matrix is a simple way to illustrate any dilemma we may have. The two axes are:

  • What do I want v what do I not want?
  • What can I do v what can’t I do?

Possible actions can usually be placed in one quadrant or another. Any that can’t, can be broken down until each component part falls into a quadrant.

Want/ can issues can be addressed through basic, goal-focussed coaching. For want/ can’t issues coaching or mentoring can explore What would have to happen to change can’t to can?

Don’t want/ can issues lead to How can you make sure you avoid this? And finally, don’t want/ can’t How will you ensure you don’t waste time and energy here?
