Contracting in supervision
The five P model, created by Patti Stevens, provides a simple but effective framework for contracting between a coach and a supervisor – both at the start of a relationship and as an occasional check-in. The
5 Ps are:
Purpose:
Agreement on the nature and intent of coaching supervision in general and for this relationship in particular.
Practical:
All the logistics – when and where to meet, for how long and how often; fees and invoicing arrangements, cancellation policy.
Plus any preferences on either part on how to work together, what models , frameworks and philosophies to use etc
Professional:
This covers issues such as confidentiality, codes of ethics, note taking, record keeping, professional liability insurance, and any specific needs by either party.
Perceptual:
How supervisor and coach will work together to examine cases and create useful insights; when it’s OK for the supervisor to share their own thoughts and feelings; how they will explore the systems operating between client, coach and supervisor
Psychological:
How coach and supervisor will clarify expectations, manage “parallel processing” and attend to each other’s well-being.
